Why is Underbody and Cavity Protection Treatment Important?

Because in every vehicle’s life, sooner or later, the unpleasantness of corrosion appears, first as small rust spots. Then, over time, a deeper and more significant rusting process begins. It’s a well-known fact that most vehicle frame structures are made of 90% iron. Whether it’s a standard passenger car, SUV, light commercial vehicle, minivan, camper, etc., in every vehicle’s life, we must sooner or later contend with problems caused by corrosion.

The corrosion of metal is a natural material process. Vehicles used in everyday life are particularly exposed to this process. Rusting is caused or at least accelerated by any mechanical damage to the car’s bodywork. This includes stone chips, minor surface damage caused by curbs during parking, scratches on the underbody from twigs and branches, and in wet weather, tall, damp grass is also a significant factor. The problem is further exacerbated by the salty, slushy water from road salting in winter, which corrodes the frame structure, and the already wet weather triggers the process. In summer, high humidity is just the icing on the cake, as moisture appearing in cavities makes their insides damp. These areas then struggle to ventilate and dry out. Thus, the car is exposed to environmental effects both in winter and summer.

Does Factory Underbody and Cavity Protection Even Exist?

Cars are either not equipped with underbody protection at all from the factory, or only very superficially (scattered in places on the chassis). These “coating remnants” primarily serve for noise reduction and stone chip protection. As for cavity protection, it can be said that almost no car comes equipped with it from the factory. Therefore, if you plan to keep a car for a longer period, underbody and cavity protection treatment is definitely worthwhile.

Since it’s not in the manufacturer’s interest for cars to serve their owners long-term, they are barely equipped with rust protection from the factory. (Unfortunately, we live in a consumer society; car manufacturers’ interest is for vehicles to be replaced as soon as possible).

Rust – Gets a Little Worse Every Year

If deep and extensive rust spots or even perforations appear on your car’s underbody, it will become increasingly difficult to treat and repair as the years pass. In many cases, the metal structure becomes so thinned by rust that the surface can’t even withstand rust removal, and it perforates from sanding. This can lead to additional bodywork being needed. It’s also not uncommon that perforations can’t be easily patched because there’s no longer an intact surface to weld to.

Sometimes, larger rust areas appear on a car seemingly overnight, even though no oxidized parts were previously noticed on the underbody. This happens because the car starts to rust from the inside out. Due to temperature fluctuations, condensation in cavities, infiltrating rainwater, and other external factors, a rusting process begins almost imperceptibly within these hidden areas. We can’t see into hard-to-reach crevices, gaps between overlaps, spot welds, or inside the sills. Thus, the problem only comes to light when the rust has already eaten its way through the surface. In older cars, these issues often lead to the end of the vehicle’s lifespan.

It’s Not Worth Waiting with Underbody and Cavity Protection Treatment!

Looking back, we often realize we could have done something about it, prevented it, or at least significantly slowed down the process with underbody and cavity protection. Underbody and cavity protection agents contain inhibitors (corrosion inhibitors), allowing them to effectively fight against corrosion. The coating seals the surface from moisture and oxygen, preventing oxidation processes from starting. If rusting has already begun, the treatment slows down further corrosion. If corrosion hasn’t started yet, underbody and cavity protection treatment means you’ll likely never have this problem.

So, it’s not worth waiting!
